Now, everyone please don't crucify me or anything, i'm just a curious person wanting to ask a question. What does everyone think about airsoft? to me, it looks a lot more "realistic." i think the effective range is greater than a paintball as well. It seems interesting to me, and i think i might want to try it sometime. Just wondering if anyone was also curious and wanted to try it out sometime. theres a CQB field in Manassas. i might be going there sometime soon.

I played with the normal spring guns! They suck I stuck it point blank in my chest and it barely stung! The air powered ones didn't seem to feel much worse either!

Tor has rented out the field to a couple of airsoft groups. The first group turned me off to it because they were into playing out a fantasy game where they spent an hour of working out their plot for every ten minuets on the field. But the other group played like we play paintball, it was a nice group of guys and I think I would have enjoyed playing with them. I ask them to shoot me and it did sting but in my opinion wasn't as painful as a lot of the paintball hits I have taken. It left a tiny little bruise. I didn't feel it had any advantage over paintball so why spend the money on new gear.

well, this field i've been looking at in manassas is a CQC field. so i would imagine you might be able to feel it a little better. the AEG/electric guns shoot upwards of 350-500fps. i'm more interested in the reality of the whole thing. airsoft guns nowadays look exactly like the real thing, weight, made of metal, the whole nine yards. and i really like that idea. plus, i like the idea of carrying a normal load of magazines and not pods. and i dont have to worry about a hopper either lol don't get me wrong, i'm not going to stop playing paintball. i just want to go to this place and try it out to see how i like it. i guess we'll see. oh btw, in case nobody knows, the big gun show up in Chantilly is going this weekend. i plan on going.

Airsoft is a lot like paintball, in that once you get sucked in, you will spend a lot of $$ trying to keep up. As for pain, I can tell you I played it once in a T-shirt (naive, I know), and if you get up close and personal the higher-end guns WILL impose serious pain. More than one broke the skin, and I had to pull one bb out with tweezers.
What I saw, and admittedly my experience is quite limited, was a lot of cheating/fudging. There is no tell-tale mark, and usually if someone gets hit they get hit a lot of times. Even if you are honest and get hit someplace you can't feel, like a pack or sneaker, there is no way to get the equivalent of a paint check, and you won't even know you were hit.
If you are going to try it, find someone into it and borrow some decent gear. Plenty of people love it, and I think once you get over the initial equipment outlay it is cheaper. You will, however, burn through a LOT of bbs, especially with a high-end gun.

I've always been curious about Air-soft, but I've also been turned off by the idea of shooting BBs at somebody (or somebody shooting them at me).
As Gunner mentions above, it seems to be somewhat hard to tell if you've been hit on areas that don't register pain.
Cheating would be much easier to pull off in Air-soft, over Paintball too.
Also, no matter how authentic the gun looks, it still shoots BBs that are smaller than a .22 caliber bullet.
In Paintball the guns are looking more an more like the real deal, minus the hopper attached to it, but at .68 to .71 caliber, it's more like a real bullet (in diameter) and there's a much smaller chance of you not feeling the hit (even if it hits your shoe, you'll feel some pressure).

It can't hurt to try out Air-soft though, but just keep in mind, as it has been mentioned before, it can be a money pit in the beginning, just like paintball, until you find out if it's really for you or not.

I've also heard may positive and negative stories about Air-soft, but the same is true for Paintball - it's all really a matter of preference.

i wish they would come out with the mil-sim bullets for those other than the military. you know, the ones that are basically a paintball round, fired with powder and a casing, and in a real rifle. they use it on that one show on the discovery channel i think, about that spec ops guy that runs around doing missions and stuff. its pretty badass. regardless, i think i might just go and try it some weekend, just to see what its like.

We had a 9mm version of these when I was at the Vienna PD - we were using them for roll playing and tactical situations, but it really didn't measure up to the impact of a .68 cal paintball - still a lot of fun though.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Chronos: yes, they do litter the field, but they are so small it takes a lot to really pile up. When you play indoor fields, they get so thick at choke points that it's easy to slip and fall on them. The push now is towards biodegradable bbs.

Walter: problem with simunitions is that they use real firearms, so way too easy for someone to get plugged with real bullet by mistake unless it's a highly-controlled field, like a military or police range. Plus, simunitions are VERY expensive, tend to foul weapons fast, and are more limited in range than real ammo so really only good for close-quarters training. I know when we used to train with them, the badguys actually used paintball guns because we would save money, and most of their contact was within 15 feet. When I ran the training, I would make everyone play in street clothes, no pads or heavy jackets (except, of course, a mask). I wanted people to feel the pain, because otherwise you get folks with a superman complex willing to dive into a room because it won't hurt to get killed. Unrealistic, and set a dangerous precedent.

When I went through the antiterrorism trainer in the Navy, we students had a different mindset. There wasn't one of us who would pull unrealistic Superman maneuvers because each of us wanted the prestige of having pwned the instructors. 8)

Of course, the only way that would happen was if you a: got lucky or b: actually applied the methods you were taught and executed them flawlessly. "B" tended to work more reliably.

one of the big downsides about airsoft, as I see it, is the whole simulation vs, just going out and shooting people up, like for instance guy A is interested in simulation so he only goes out with a 10 round clip, vs guy B who doesn't care about simulation so he goes out with 1000 bb's and will cheat his butt off, I wouldn't mind trying it with people wanting to do it as realistic as possible, real looking weapons, realistic amounts of ammo, and people who play honestly, but I wouldn't really be into playing it like paintball, just to easy to cheat, or not even know your out, and the ability to go out on the field with insane amounts of ammo, since it's so small, light, and cheap, just doesn't sound like as much fun as paintball

Airsoft is a sport that i do actually play on a regular basis. Gunner: there are bb's that you can buy for 50 cents more than normal that are biodegradeable. never played with em, but they seem to be as accurate as normal bbs. (which isn't very accurate at all) yes, admittedly, they don't hurt (i play with swimming trunks and no shirt in the summer) but, as walter mentioned, the gats are VERY realistic, in weight, in size, and in feel. It's MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper than pb, but i don't think you will find it as realistic; it's very easy to play a day and not get hit, which for me is strange. (if any of you know me, you know i'm a mini rambo on the airsoft/pb field, so not getting hit says something about the sport...) Walter, if you do go, make sure you get a rifle, shooting at least 350, but i wouldn't go any higher than 400fps, or your accuracy is going to be laughable. really.

PS: walter, i'm up at CQB all the time, maybe we'll finally meet!

i think i'm good. haha. i am however, psyched for this Battle of the Bulge game. Are we going to set up a car pooling thing? i think that would be easiest, just have everyone pitch in for gas. at least, that would be the more economical way to do things haha.
